If you are here for 2 weeks, it would be helpful if you let us know of
your interests. While we have subway type trains here in Vancouver that
only goes in two different directions and won't go to the airport 8
miles away for another 10 years, and it doens't go to any of the tourist
attracctions as it was built recently to get people to work so you may
or may not want to rent a vehicle. Most of the Bed and Breakfasts are
converted houses (very small) as opposed to when I was in London and the
place was a converted hotel. Most flophouse hotels here get converted
into hostels and are in less than idea areas of the city as you can
understand.

I can recommend them because I stayed there for 11 nights, and your posting
didn't specify that you were looking for hotels or B&Bs within a particular
price range. The cost per night was round about C$120 - if I remember
correctly, but that was last July/August.

It is also in a quiet street, but within easy walking distance of
Robson.Street for restaurants, buses etc. I found them on the internet, and
wrote to one of the people who'd posted a review on the Fodors website to
check it was OK for a female staying there on her own.
I'm under 60, not on a diet, I eat normally and breakfast there consists of
two courses+. Is that relative and detailed enough?
Janet

There are several "backpackers" hostels in the downtown area. Yes,
they're cheap but No, they're not fancy. The most commonly expressed
concern about them is *security*, which mostly refers to prevention of
theft. Hostelling International has 2 properties, 1 downtown, one out
near the beaches. Next step up is YMCA / YWCA "hotels" - both downtown,
both modern, both secure.

About a year ago I went in and asked questions about a backpackers
hostel near
Cambie and Hastings (downtown) and they said there were 4 to 6 beds to a
room as I recall and a locker for
belongings just like hostels in Europe. I am not sure how security
would be any different
here in Vancouver as opposed to any hostel anywhere else? It was around
19 or 20 dollars a night. Most of us
don't travel with anything of value.

I agree the YMCA is the next step up, and very nice single rooms but I
am not sure of the price. I suspect the price would be 50 to 60 dollars
a night.
