I stayed at the West End Guest House, Haro Street, Vancouver. It's one block
away from Robson Street, lovely and quiet, and the breakfasts are to die
for. There's even a guests kitchen full of cookies and stuff for making your
own drinks if you want.

Both May and September deliver good weather most years. There is no
need for any special clothing, but evenings can be cool. Any outdoor
store will have a wide selection of lightweight "shell" jackets if you
find you need one. A good pair of lightweight ankle boots (sometimes
known as "street hikers") will see you through any of the terrain you
are likely to encounter in town or around popular tourist attractions.
A sun-hat is strongly advised; the Tilley Endurables line is excellent.

As to car rentals, your plan seems likely to be costly. Few companies
still offer "unlimited" mileage, and the distances you are talking about
will add up very quickly. So will the "basic daily rental" charges, and
a Seattle rental agency may be nervous about the number of days you
would spend in Canada. Lastly, insurance coverage for "vehicle damage
waiver" and "third party liability" will be very expensive if bought
through the rental agency -- you should look into coverage from your UK
car insurer, or through your credit cards.

Hope this helps!
