For those who take the trip through the caverns - expect a hard walk. It is a bit of a walk to the entrance and it is uphill - steep hill. The stairs in the cavern are not always easy. Some twist and turn and there is one point where you have to slide on your rear through a low spot in the cave.

Unlike some parts of LA this place really stands out. It's the Melrose of Venice Beach. The restaurants are delicious and the shops are cute and edgy. Antiques and vintage clothing. Stuck in between are incredible art galleries from abstract arts, sculptures, photography and even eco-conscious photography galleries. Imagine this but fill those Stores with live bands and random performances. The galleries are an open house serving beer, wine, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Everyone seems to be having a blast. I recommend it if your near Venice, come check it out. In a any case there is free food and drinks!...ASH:rolleyes:

The island of Rab is heading toward its 120th anniversary of organized tourism with ambitious plans for reconstruction of tourist facilities, implementation of infrastructural projects and a rich celebratory program that will surely interest and delight many lovers of this special island of rich culture, customs and a quality tourist offer.

In 1889, the Rab Municipal Council proclaimed Rab a tourist destination and a health resort, which was a logical combination of the natural wealth, mild climate and hospitable locals. Not long after the decision, they began to build the first inns and hotels, and tourist boats began to arrive in Rab Port. Since that time, the island has experienced intensive tourist development and it now has a rich hotel & catering offer and provides the guests with extensive cultural, entertainment and sport & recreation facilities in a unique ambient.

Although the celebration program has yet to be defined, it is already quite clear that the year 2009 will be marked by this significant anniversary, including a scientific conference, a workshop, a formal meeting and a promotional film dedicated to the 120th anniversary of organized tourism.

They also plan to arrange programs that will particularly please the tourists and the residents of the island. In addition to the traditional performances by the Rapski Tanac Folklore Society and Rab Crossbowmen, the program will include a series of cultural, entertainment and sporting programs intended equally for all generations.

The planned infrastructural works on the island will surely contribute to the festive atmosphere. They have announced construction of Stinica Ferry Port, improvement of Rtic Beach, renovation of Hotel Imperial to the 4-star standard, etc.

The Alabama Gulf Coast is known as a wonderful place for birding. In addition to natives, migratory guests make the beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach a stopover or temporary home.

Of all the many types of birds that come and go, my favorite type is, of course, the snowbird! (For those who might not know, “snowbird” is the affectionate nickname given to those who spend the winter months in the South and the warmer months elsewhere; since they “fly south for the winter,” they are dubbed “snowbirds.”)

Any area visited part of the year by travelers welcomes guests during its off-season because that helps the local economy. But with snowbirds, there's so much more than simple dollars and cents. The snowbirds who come to this community are “invested” in it in the deepest sense of the word. They don't just come to stay here for a few months, they live here, and they become part of the community. They volunteer; they take part in fundraisers; they help with community projects. They make this a better place to live and to bring up families.

It is such a joy to see friends come back after months away. Although there are all sorts of ways to keep in touch, there's nothing quite like a seafood meal shared with the Gulf of Mexico as a backdrop and exchanging tales of the time away.

Welcome back, snowbirds!

Be Kind to Turtles on the Alabama Gulf Coast

Remember how we moms are always (always!) saying, “Turn off the light when you leave the room!”? Well, now we have even more proof that we're right. If you won't do it for us, for the sake of the household budget or for the environment, do it for the sea turtles.

That's right, sea turtles.

The Alabama Gulf Coast is home to several species of sea turtles, including some species that are threatened. It turns out, one of the biggest threats comes from a seemingly innocent source: artificial light. Scientists call it “coastal light pollution.”

Female turtles return to the beach where they were born to nest and lay their eggs. Bright lights on beaches can cause the turtles to become disoriented, leading them to drown in swimming pools, wander into traffic or fall victim to predators.

Hatchlings count on the lights of nature to guide them from their nests to the ocean. For the tiny critters, it's a long trek filled with peril, and that peril is compounded when bright lights confuse little guys.

Scientists from Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and lots of volunteers work in the local Share the Beach program to make sure that sea turtle nests remain undisturbed and that hatchlings have a save trip to the Gulf of Mexico. Everyone can help by following guidelines for lighting. It's good for the earth, and it's good for the turtles.

Maybe there are too many people and not enough house; maybe there are friends (and we do have some of these types) who just feel more comfortable in their “own” accommodations. They love to spend time with us, hang out, catch up, shop, sightsee, whatever – but then be able to feel as if they aren't “overstaying their welcome” by going to a hotel, condo or other rental facility. Hey, if it means they come more frequently and stay an extra day, we're good with it.

We know we have friends we'll see a lot more this time of year than during the summer. They will take advantage of the great rates to be found on the Alabama Gulf Coast, and they'll make several visits.

I have a plan for the next trip. I'm going to propose a boy/girl weekend. The gals will take over the rental, and we'll make sure to get one of the “shop 'til you drop, then hit the spa” packages” available at www.thebeachiscalling.org. The guys can have the house to themselves, and we'll have three days to catch up, chill out and plan for Christmas!

And what a great time to come! Everything seems to be just a bit more refreshing. Sunrise is an awesome display of colors, with hues of gold gradually brightening the sky. During the day, the steady rise of the sun is complemented by the steady rise of the temperatures, making the outdoors so appealing. And when dusk begins to set in, the blue sky turns to red and the sun slips behind the horizon. The temperatures are perfect for snuggling with a mug of hot chocolate next to a fire on the beach as the waves lap nearby.

Perhaps the ultimate in long haul luxury, the Maldives is currently enjoying incredible growth again having bounced back from a series of disasters in the past few years including the coral bleaching wrought by el Niño and the horror of the 2004 tsunami. Indeed, so superior are its beaches, so cobalt blue its waters and so warm its welcome that the country has become a byword for paradise whether it be for honeymooners, sun worshippers or divers.

A geological eccentricity nestled in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives are a series of ancient coral reefs that grew up around the sides of towering prehistoric volcanoes. These immense structures have long since sunk into the ocean, leaving behind coral islands of incredible natural beauty, now themselves being colonised by travellers seeking unbridled pampering and romance.

This is life stripped down to simplicity – bright blue skies, all-year sunshine and fantastic diving and snorkelling in lagoons the temperature of bath water. The country embraces travellers from around the world allowing them the freedoms holiday makers require without compromising the islands’ deep Muslim faith one bit.

This is an exciting time to visit a country in developmental frenzy. Every few months brings newly opened resorts from top end boutique brands to ecologically sound back-to-nature hotels. Not cheap even at the bottom end, this is a place for a holiday of a lifetime (and that phrase suddenly takes on a new meaning here). The Maldives demands the attention of anyone looking for a uniquely indulgent break, breathtaking nature and sheer beauty that stays with you long after your tan has faded.
Its strategic position opens up to 3 important routes; the MALOIA PASS leading to Switzerland and St. Moritz, the SPLUGA PASS, another route into Switzerland leading to Zurich, and VALCHIAVENNA, leading to LAKE COMO and MILAN.

Surrounded by the ALPS, it offers the possibility of numerous mountain activiites; Alpine skiing, crosscountry skiing, snowboarding, etc. in winter and mountaineering, climbing, trekking and mountain-biking in the summer, to name just a few. Also with Lake Como just 20 minutes down the road, it also offers various water sports; windsurf, kitesurf, etc. as well as paragliding, hang-gliding, etc.etc.
Together with my husband, we organise trekking holidays, covering some of the most beautiful itineraries to be found in the Alps.
We have two bases, one in CHIAVENNA and the other in LIVIGNO, another very popular tourist resort both in summer and winter and home to many international sport's events.
Just last month, Raj Mohan Gandhi planted a tree in the India Garden, where an 11-foot bronze statue of his grandfather Mahatma Gandhi stands. The gardens have been an ongoing work in progress for decades, as some of them date back to the 1930’s, while others are just now reaching proposals and planning stages. As I took a stroll outside today, I had a thought: On days when Alabama is as beautiful as it is today, we should charge admission!! The temperature is perfect; the sky is blue; there's a wee bit of a breeze; and the nights are starting to just hint at the coming of winter (a term we generally use pretty loosely down here!). And the Alabama Gulf Coast is the perfect place to be on days like this: The Gulf still is warm, but the air somehow seems lighter, fresher, sweeter. It's what might be called, to coin a phrase, “Convention and Visitors Bureau” weather. Sweet home Alabama? You betcha!
