    Default Bikes: Slimed tires?

My daughter tells me the tires on her new bike were slimed. I think
that means that slime was injected into the innertubes. Right? (She
does not have the Slime innertube product.)

What are people's thoughts on that? Is it effective for pinch flats?
    For other kinds of flats?

I had considered the Slime innertube for my bike. I did not care
about the extra weight; I liked the heavy-duty tube as well as the
concept of slime. But I was talked out of it when an experienced
sales person said that it makes a mess when a puncture occurs.
Besides the mess, I began to doubt the hype and wonder if slime can
really seal a puncture quickly enough.

Do you need to stop biking in order to give the slime a chance to
work? If so, for how long?

Good point! I had not thought about that. I assume the "proper
orientation" is with the value stem pointing up.

Thanks for the other comments, too.

Absoutely not. You want the valve stem at either the 10 o'clock or
2 o'clock position, so the Slime will drain away from the valve.
The stem will thus be pointing down from near the top of the tire.

Perhaps, but this recommendation comes from my box of Slime tubes. I doubt
there's enough Slime in the valve when in this location to really matter.

Dunno about effectiveness, but I tried carrying a slimes spare
for awhile (came by it accidentally...) and when it finally came
time to use it the valve had jammed - presumably from the Slime -
    and I couldn't inflate it.

What worked for me was 45 degrees from bottom dead center, and giving
the Slime a moment to drip down before attaching a gauge or pump.

Try 4:30 or 7:30 of the clock. If they get junked up, extract the
valve core, pick the fuzz out, and try again.

    Excellent observation.

How does one know they've had a puncture?

Slime dribbling out, but not deflating?
