Default UK Phones - Compatible with Oz SIM cards?

I will be spending 10 weeks on Australia & New Zealand, and wonder what's
the score when it comes to mobile phones?

If I was to bring my UK phone, does anyone know if this will work with a
"pay as you go" SIM card bought in Australia?

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Many thanks,

Simon
England.

Bear in mind the exchange rate will be in your favour so it may be worth
looking at phones here with a view to taking one back to the UK with you.

I find Vodafone best in most parts of NSW.

A word of advice to the original OP (and probably already known to
most, but worth restating) - if on a GSM mobile and you need to
contact emergency services (anywhere in the world, for that matter)
ALWAYS use 112 rather than the local emergency number (000 in
Australia) - it will use any available carrier, even if your own
carrier is out of coverage.
