I have a choice of four nights in any of the following
locations:
P'aihia
Auckland
Rotorua
Dunedin
I also have a choice of timing - late October to early
November, or February.
I'd appreciate any suggestions on location and timing
particularly with respect to the weather, with your reasons.
We're leaning towards November in Rotorua, so I'd also
appreciate any comments on the strength of the odours from
the sulphur.
We intend to rent a car and do day trips radiating from the
hotel. We'll probably add two or three days wandering
en-route from the airport to the hotel. Our interests are
general - the people, scenery, culture, small towns and
villages. We aren't hikers or bushwalkers.
TIA

if you want to holiday, great for shopping and eating, can do that
year round as well.

Great in Febuary, especially if you mountain cycle, at least walk through
the redwood forest and ussually quite warm in Feb.

Well all I can say is that unless you are an eskimo looking for a place to
feel like home, stay away from Dunedin in late Winter!

Do you have accomodation as well or would you like some suggestions there?

You will hate the smell for the first 24 hours, then all your sinuses will
clear and yoru nose will dry up and it will still stink! But hey, its not
gunna kill you, its unpleasent for a little while and only in some parts of
the city. (unfortunately Fenton Street which is the main rtourist area is
quite bad some days) Most other places like the redwoods, the Luge, the
blue and green lakes, the buried village are all reasonably stink free.
Feel free to get more in depth if ya want more info. I love Rotorua, great
place to have fun.
(No I dont live there but have visited there many many times.)

Dont need to be a great walker to enjoy the forests there, theres a carpark
close by and nice senery short walks away from most places. Check out the
mud pools, Whakawarewara. (Not sure if Ive spelt that right but its
pronounced like Fok-a-ray-wa-ray-wa.)

I'd recommend going in February. It's still quite warm (but New Zealand
weather the way it is, can't be guaranteed)
But you'll find more availability in hotels and less crowded attrractions.
Go in Nov/Dec and it gets busy.
Roturua in particular can get busy at peak time.
For weather, the further north you are the better. P'aihia shuld be nice.
As for the sulphur, well you can't escape it, it is natural, but you get
used to it, don't let that put you off Rotorua
