| | Guest | How is Britz for car hire in New Zealand? Hello all, we are honeymooning in NZ in June and have booked a car (Toyota
Echo) through Britz car hire.
Any comments on their level of service, car conditions, tricks and traps
etc?
I notice there insurance excess is quite low for hire cars, only $1000.

| | Guest | How is Britz for car hire in New Zealand? The company is very good, but get a car with a larger engine. New Zealand
has lots of hills and petrol is cheap. The roads are narrow and so you need
plenty of power for over-taking campervans and cars towing boats.

How long since you were in NZ?
I was there last week and petrol prices range from
$1.295 NZto $1.340 NZ per LITRE in North Island
and $1.299 to $1.345 in the South Island...that isnt very cheap.
Worst in the west coast areas from Greymouth to Fox glacier.
If using diesel, then that is a lot cheaper than petrol,
around the 85c NZ to 89.9cNC per litre.
LPG is fairly dear also in the 70c range for a litre.
In Australia we are still less thn $1.15 per litre.
BTW Toyota Echo will give you about 600 Kms per tank full.
Refilling from the empty mark will be about 35 litres
depending on how full you make it after the first "click off" of the filler.
Always fill up in morning before you leave if quarter or less full as
there are some big kms between petrol outlets in some places,
especially going along the west coast back up from Wellington towards
Auckland and its a long way to walk if you run out.
Likewise on the west coast of South Island.
Dont just look at a map, see a town and assume there will be fuel ...
not so... some smaller towns dont have a petrol station at all.
Definitely take the daytrip out to Doubtful sound,
well worth the $200 NZ per person
Boat -Coach (including underground power station trip)
- 3 hour boat trip on the sound out to the sea and return to whence
you started. Good idea to take your car to where the first boat leaves
and dont worry about getting coach to first boat, especially from
Queenstown at 0645 departure.
Stay in Te Aneau and drive (15-20 minutes) to boat in
Manipouri or stay in Manipouri.
BTW if you want reasonable accomodation there is a group of
Tourist parks called Top 10 Parks and they have all kinds of levels of a
ccomodation from $55 NZ (plus hire of a duna/douvet for $6NZ per night
if you dont have your own) up to $110 for a fully equipped with kitchen
motel room type.
For around $75-$90 NZ you can get a studio room with kitchen and
bedding provided in them.
If schoool holidyas it will pay to do booking in some areas but mainly
just roll up and ask what they have for about $x.xx with ensuite
(if that is what you want)
You join their "club" for $20NZ at first tourist park and get 10% discount
at that one and all you use.
Found that internet cafea all over the place , just ask someone and
they usually know where one is.They range in price from $2 to $5 per hour.
Some public libraries have FREE internet acces but you need to "book "
a time up to 30 minutes earlier in the day or hang around . Try it.
Also found that there is a franchised group of restaurants that sell
reasonble
priced meals called Cobb & Co.
Have nightly specials like two roast main courses for $20.
Some of them are in Hotels with accomodation that are also
reasonable price.ie Law Courts Hotel in Dundedin 100 metres from
Railway station (historical item) and 100 metres from the main
town square and it was $90 for a ensuite room
(parking included) and breakfast included (full English type).
Not super flash but neat tidy clean and bed mattress was good.
Watch out if asking for a studio room in hotels etc.,
which usually have full kitchen facilities as the NZ hotels use
this term very loosely .
We stayed at one foro $95 for the night , but you couldnt cook
anything as it didnt have the kitchen.
Not even a toaster which even the $55 cabins at the parks had.
They had the bed, a settee and that was it....bit of a misnomer
calling it a studio room.
Have a great time in NZ , the weather for our three weeks was
excellent except for Anzac day in Wellington...Hail Lightning
and Thunder, but cleared up the next day so we could go up
the cable car to top of hill.
Most large towns you could find parking in the CBD a problem
so leave your car at the hotel/motel and get a day pass on the
buses and get around usuing that. The Auckland day pass on
Stagecoach line buses can be used on the ferries to outlying
areas as well , like Devenport.
If you want o see Auckland from above, drive up to top of
Mount Eden its a good view of the whole place
(dont use bus to get there as its a long walk up the side of the
hill to get to lookout, unless you like climb walks.)

| | Guest | How is Britz for car hire in New Zealand? I'm in NZ looking for a job and visa for almost 3 months.
PETROL PRICES ARE HIGH.
Its not my biggest problem.
NZ IS RACIST. NZ IS POOR.
NZ has forced even doctors from HK to flee to Sydney twice per week
just to get money since RACIST kiwis don't like chinese.
NZ uses Asians for about 20% of its income each year (tourism - mostly
Japanese, Chinese - mostly education, Thailand and Chinese - mostly
).
But they only give them temporary visas - never living visas.
There is a lot of fighting amongst native Kiwis and European
immigrants.
NZ kids have not future - they try to get "overseas experience" in
Australia or any other place that will take them. Lots of Kiwis I meet
here routinely give up uproot there lifes from South Island to North or
from NZ to Sydney (typicallly) JUST TO GET A REAL JOB.
NZ has very high suicide rate - what does it tell you?
ZN embassy in China and India is deliberately understaffed so they
don't have to process the 100,000 plus applicants for residency to NZ -
its 'passive racism' - Goverment style.
NZ uses asians for money by issuing lots of temporary visas so you
sspend your money there but once you want to live there ..............
its a VERY DIFFERENT STORY.
its racism throughout the society. The white european settlers don't
even own theh land so the natives who are living with much lower
standard of living still have power since they own there country (by
historic decree). So there's there's this tension between real kiwis
and white immigrant kiwis.
AND EVERY KIWI I MET DENIES ALL OF THIS. THEY NEVER HAD THEMSELVES
TRIED IN FRONT OF A WORLD COURT SO THEY ARROGANTLY AND SELF-RITCHEOUSLY
CALL THEIR RACISM A LIE.
Trust me. Foriegners are used in NZ for money through the many
temporary visa programs they have but the minute you want to immigrate
BOTH THE GOVERNMENT AND TE POEPLE DO EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO TAKE YOUR
MONEY BUT DON'T LET YOU LIVE THERE.
MANY KIWIS I MEET HERE HAVE HAD A HARD LIFE. THEY GO TO AUSSIE LAND.
THEY COMMIT SOUCIDE. THEY RIDE BIKES AND TAKE A BUS SINCE THEY CAN'T
AFFORD A CAR. THEY HAVE NO HOPE FOR A FUTURE.
THERE'S A BUM ON THIS LIST WHICH WILL NOW ATTACK MY POST IN
SELF-DEFENSE. DON'T TRUST HER. SHE HERSELF MOVED OUT LONG AGO!
NZ IS RACIST AND WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AS A TOURSIT, JOB HOPEFUL, ETC.
BUT IT WILL NEVER LIKE YOU.

He is not posting *from* an Australian address, but *with* an
Australian *e-mail* address. Doesn't mean a thing. For example I have
(amongst others) a German e-mail address, but live in The Netherlands.
OTOH, he *does* post *from* a non-NZ IP address (see the
"NNTP-Posting-Host:" header), namely a *US* one: 70.23.9.184 =
pool-70-23-9-184.ny325.east.. Strange!

It's not (so much) the grammar which matters (i.e. not the "from"
versus "with"), but the e-mail address versus IP address. I.e. he didn't
post from/with/<whatever> an Australian address, but from an US address.
I hope you agree that there is a big difference between being in
Australia and being in the US. If not, I pity you! :-)
