Last year, it was cool and comfortable while I was there. I don't
remember any significant air pollution. We wore light jackets when it
was dark outside. The day we flew out, it was so foggy at PEK that
the morning flight was delayed by about 10 hours due to very heavy fog
(we could not see the runway).
If you plan to do any shopping, go to someplace like the Silk Street
market or the Pearl Market. If you know what you are buying, try to
bargain down to about 10-20% of the price you would pay at Wal-Mart or
Harbor Freight. Otherwise, stick to low-cost items. The asking price
for small stuff like 9-LED flashlight, a red laser pointer, etc., was
10 RMB which was low enough for me to not bargain very hard. I paid
20 RMB for a souvenir t-shirt at Badaling, but I overhead others get
them for 15, and 10 is probably possible. You could get Olympic
baseball caps for 5 RMB, so they will probably be even cheaper this
year. My favorite was a "fur" Red Army winter cap where the initial
asking price was 200RMB, and the seller was delighted to sell it for
20 RMB (the construction quality seems pretty good, and it did a good
job keeping my head warm last winter). If you need to buy extra
luggage for all of your purchases, try to pay less than 200 RMB. |
