I might add that if one is considering a trip to Chang then own wheels
should be a good investment. The island is pretty large and distances long
and public transportation much in it's infancy. There are lots of smallish
water falls and plenty of hilly jungle for adventurous. I guess the road is
not completed to a full circle to this date but the final stretch in the
south is still to be worked out.

I hope you're talking about New Year *next year*, because you're a
little late to start planning a Thailand vacation for this coming New
Year.

Default peaceful beach destination in thailand

thanks for the infos, keep'em coming :-)

some details:

- destination can pretty much only be thailand because 1. I have the
tickets for bangkok already, and 2. my girlfriend is from a country
that can not easily get visa to the surrounding places in asia. no visa
necessary for thailand for her.

- I have been to burma beginning of this year. wonderful place, and I'm
sure the beaches there must be very nice & deserted, however the visa
issue is the same there... also, for the repressive regime, well, yes,
it is, I've actually talked to locals who commented about it (a few
monks especially), but I got the feeling they are somewhat feeling they
can't do much about it.

- I'm going to look into koh chang & koh samet. I got some mixed
reviews from friends about samet and the quality of the beaches there,
any take on that ?

- might continue trying to get a place in phi phi / krabi / lanta, but
god, it looks everything's completely booked, and therefore I'm a bit
afraid of the amount of people there'll be there...
