If its only 6 weeks, I really would spend it travelling in China. There is so much to see doing weekend trips there. But if you really want to get out, Japan is certainly one of the closer destinations. There are direct flights between Shanghai and Osaka from where you can visit the traditional capital of Japan, Kyoto (I could spend a lot of time there). I lived 8 years in Japan so Japan is obviously a favorite for me.
But, again, I would recommend weekenders in China. I would definitely visit Beijing, but nearby you have Suzhou, Hangzhou, Wuxi, etc. I have always wanted to visit coastal China but have never made it there yet (unless you want to count Hong Kong). I'm sure it would be interesting and I can only imagine how good the seafood would be.
Well, I'm sure that is not much help. Hopefully someone else can jump in with suggestions around Asia.
