I promise it's a good idea. Beijing and Xi'an are all old style city,
Shanghai is more modern.
If u could arrange yr plan more.

I would recommend starting in Beijing, and working your way down to
Hong Kong. It's usually better to do the sight-heavy places at the
start of a trip, so you don't get tired of seeing palaces, temples,
historic sights, etc. before you even get to the best and most
important ones.
