Default bag tampering in thai airports?

So I'm heading to thailand this winter and all anyone keeps telling me
are stories about people getting nailed in Bali with drugs in their
bags. Of course, all these people claim that it was planted there by
airline workers.

I figure it's not somethign to worry about too much, but my travel
companion is getting a bit nervous. Is this something that's occuring
much in Thailand as well?

Cheers

Yes, and most of them are lying. Trying to get out of a rather severe
jail sentence.

I am currently holding 2 tickets to Thailand (in December and in
January). I'm kind of looking forward to the next trip after that
because it will mark 100 international arrivals for me in Bangkok. I
have checked baggage on roughly half those flights. I have never had my
bags tampered with or broken in to. Further I work with a whole bunch
of people who fly in and out of Thailand regularly and have never heard
of any complaint from any of them.

Remember that the bag tampering allegations from the Aussies being
arrested in Indonesia stem are that the bag was tampered with in
Australia. If someone is going to put drugs in your bag to smuggle it
into Thailand they are going to do it at your home airport not once
it's already in Thailand.

From the stories I've heard in Sydney, I think the chances of your bags
being interfered with are higher here than in Thailand. Qantas has finally
had to admit it's sacked some baggage handlers for "irregularities". We've
never had a problem in Thailand - maybe they realise that tourism is too
valuable for them to stuff around with farang bags.

Some of those caught in Bali have been nailed with the drugs in their
possession, so it's hard to blame baggage handlers at either end!

Take the usual precautions of locking your luggage etc.
