Default Weather in Chiang Rai & Chiang Mai

I’d be traveling to Thailand for 3 weeks in Dec 04 to Jan 05. I want to
find out how is the weather like in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai during this
period. I understand that it’s the cold season. What is the climate like?
Since I’d be backpacking, I want to travel light as much as possible.
Would a light jacket or pull over be sufficient during my stay in Chiang
Rai and Chiang Mai. Please advice. Thank you.

the higher region are colder. I spent a December in Pai (80 km far of
ChiangMai but higher). In the early night it's still okay, coldest was in
the morning. 5 to 6 am we had 10ºC and folks told me about colder. If your
host equip you well with blankets (bamboo huts are common up there) and
sleep to 10 in the morning you not realized unpleasant temperatures.

btw. I always take a towel or pull over with me in asia. It's quickly
applied on my neck when entering a building, vehicle or drafty train to
avoid the climashock and sudden ill. Air con, if exists, running on the
maximum. ALLWAYS.

Have a nice trip

I'll go along with that - I spent a couple of weeks in Pai (with a few days
in Mae Hong Son - excellent night on New Years Eve, a real family event) at
the end of December/ start of January at the end of last year.
It's still nice and warm during the day, but that early morning shower lead
to shivering while drying off afterwards!

Still, it hasn't put me off, and I'll be back there for a few weeks teaching
in the local school again in December this year. Sooo looking forward to
it.

<sighs wistfully and recalculates just how long it'll be before I can afford
to move there permanently . . . .>
