Bangkok to Northeast India

Calcutta (Kolkata) seems to be the best option. I am sure thai, Indian
airlines do this route.

They do. For instance the Amadeus engine gives the timetable for BKK->CCU.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will fly to Calcutta and then
take the train to Varanasi. Thanks a lot. Any more suggestions are
welcome!

yeah- here's a tip . . . a few hours from Varanasi is a totally unspouilt
Muslim city straight out of the Middle ages

JAUNPUR
fort, Mosques, a cool old bridge and such, even a faded palace

hire a taxi for the day from Varanasi, you wont find a single westerner, or
tout or scam artiste
just you , the flys and the marvelous archectural reminants of a Muslim
dynasty. Makes a great time-out from Varanasi.

I can't believe I'm telling anyone, but no one ever goes, so what the hey!
