| | Guest | Bangkok Hotel 3 to 4 * Close to good shopping areas and safe for lone female? Hi,
Can anyone recommend a 3 to 4 star hotel under $100 a night that is in
a good location (i.e. safe to walk to and from at night for a lone
female) and is close to or near to transport that will not take long
to get to the good shopping areas of Bangkok!! Thanks, any help would
be appreciated. | |

As a lone female in Bangkok visiting on business, I liked the Mandarin on
Rama IV (in my edition of LP its on the edge of the Silom-Surawong area
map). Last time I stayed there (which was 4 years ago now) it was 1300 Baht
for a nice big room and breakfast, internet price. Thats well under your
budget. I'm not sure how many stars it has but it certainly is on e of the
glitziest hotels I've ever stayed in. It has a small pool and a very good
Thai restaurant (not expensive and not watered down for Western tourists>
it takes mostly Asian visitors. If you eat early you can escape the
crooners too!). It has other restaurants as well but I never bothered with
them.
I found Bangkok to be a safe city and taking a taxi on my own in the wee
small hrs was not a problem (I wasn't frequenting the red light/night life
districts though, just been out with friends who live there). You can walk
to Patpong (which has a lot of silk and jewel shops on Silom) and there are
a lot of shopping malls along Surawong, the next street along, too. You can
walk to Siam square in about 10-15 minutes too (Skytrain station) up
PhayaThai rd, and I have walked further along to the malls such as the
World Trade Centre along Ploenchit but you have to be a more dedicated
walker for that, depedning on the weather: Taxis are cheap! I never take
tuk tuks if I can help it as they are less regulated and more unpleasant in
the traffic and usually cost no less than taxis. One of the reasons I like
the Mandarin is that there are always taxis to be flagged down on the road
outside so you are not stuck with the expensive hotel service: it helps if
you speak a little Thai, or at least have the name of the place you want to
go to written down in Thai (although not all the drivers can read they can
at least show it to someone else and find out).

Yes, and there are a lot of good restaurants in the Emporium, both casual
and more formal. There is a nice grocery store that also has lots of
prepared foods for take away. | |
