Default options traveling with Liquor

We are in the US and traveling next week to the UK. We would like to bring
our host some Jack Dainels.
Can this fly with us IN the plane as a carry on? Do we pay tax on it when we
arrive?
I read duty free, but is it cheaper to buy at the airports? It does have to
be Jack Dainels so I would not want to take a chance they did not have it.

As you can tell, we dont' travel much, this is the first time using a
passport. (I'm excited)

Cheryl

I would just buy the whiskey in the cheapest discount liquor store
that you can find. This will be less expensive than any duty free
I've ever seen in an airport. Then bubble wrap it and place it in the
middle of your checked luggage surrounded by soft clothes. It should
be fine.

Thank-You George and everyone else that responded.
I think I"m going to put it in the check in luggage.
I appreciate all the suggestions.

U.S. regulations will permit you to buy the booze duty-free airside at the
departure airport (that is, you can buy it at the airport inside security).
That is the only way you can carry it.

You can't buy any Tax or Duty-Free alcohol or tobacco products at any UK
arrivals area. And the o p is aware that Jack Daniels is available just
about everywhere?

There are plenty of airports in Europe where departure and arrival are
in the same security area.
However, the question whether or not you can access duty free sales on
arrivals is completely irrelevant. You can only purchase goods duty free
at an airport in the EU if you are flying somewhere outside the EU. You
have to prove this by displaying your boarding card for the destination
when you make the purchase. If your destination is inside the EU, then
no sale.

Hello!
I wanted to follow up from my trip the question I asked here last month. I
really appreciated all the replys to help me decide what to do with the
purchase of JD for our host. I ended up buying here in Michigan 43.00 and I
believe 6% tax as groceries here are taxed. *but I'm not positive on the 6%*
I stored it, well wrapped, in our checked luggage. In Detriot we could have
bought it duty free for 34.00 and they would deliver it to the plane. BUT
here is the 'but', when we arrrived to the Heathrow in London, our plane did
not get a gate so we had to wait for stairs,, then buses, then walk 100
miles before picking up luggage. (ok, not 100) But, once at bagages pick up
area, there was backups of suitcases from other flights and ours, so our
bags (along with a hunderd others) were taken off the belt and moves behind
in a near by area. (out of sight, which was not announces and no one knew on
our flight). It was crazy. I'm happy we bought at home not Detroit so we
did not have to lug the whiskey from plane to bus to tim-buck-two. I'm also
happy we did not wait to buy the JD in Heathrow as that was also another
duty free option. Our friends had already waited for us because of the snafu
arriving.

We had an outstanding time in England and it was wonderful to spend so much
time with our friends.

Thank you everyone that replied.
Cheryl
PS and this was Terminal 4 not 5. <G>
