Default US air travel with a laptop?

I've never been asked to power up any of my electronics... laptop, cameras,
etc. In fact, my laptop has yet to ever be examined other than just by
passing through the scanner. No residue wipes of anything. The only thing
they were adamant about was the laptop had to be sent through the scanner by
itself. You can't leave it in the case or anything.

I don't doubt it has happened for others; I just know I've never experienced
it. Not yet, anyway.

I've had to turn it on but it's been a while since that happened.
