Olympic Airways

On a trip to Greece in October of 2006 my wife and I arrived in Athens
with old fashioned paper Olympic Airlines tickets (purchased on the
Internet) for a trip to and from Santorini. I made a special effort to
seek out the Olympic Airlines office in Athens to confirm our
reservations to Santorini and was told everything was OK. Three days
later I checked in at the Olympic desk in the Athens Airport. I was
told our flight had been canceled due to "mechanical difficulties", but
I could fly on another flight three hours later. Three hours waiting
in the Athens Airport is not a lot of fun, but we had no choice. I
suspected that the flight I originally booked was undersold and was
cancelled in order to fill a later flight.

On the return flight from Santorini back to Athens, the weather was bad
and the Olympic flight was in doubt. At the tiny airport on Santorini
there was no information provided and passengers were not even informed
where and precisely when the flight would depart or if it would depart
at all. While a lengthy wait continued my luggage was setting
somewhere in the rain getting soaked. The plane finally took off, but
very late.

I had been warned that Olympic Airlines, was on the verge of
bankruptcy, frequently cancelled flights and generally screwed up. I
originally tried to book my Santorini flight on the competing Aegean
Airlines Web site, but couldn't figure out how to do that. If you can
avoid Olympic Airlines do it.

did you notice that Olympic Airlines' frequent flier club is called
'Icarus'? makes you wonder.

by the way, last spring we booked Olympic to Santorini, they changed
the schedule, and we cancelled. then we booked Aegean online and
everything went fine.
