I had heard $700 max allowed.

I'd be interested in this - it's been difficult finding a policy to
cover photo equipment carried in the hold.

"Statistically", airline losses are pretty minimal, given the number of pax
hauled and the value of the potential number/value of claims.
Were I you, I'd check with some other insurance carriers. There are a
number which write business insurance for equipment such as you describe,
and in case of claims, will have you subrogate your rights. If you're
carrying that much photo equipment, you should expect that coverage is going
to cost more than $50. a year, barely a rider on your homeowner's policy and
likely to come with small print clauses which leave you "Katrinad" as the
current expression goes.

IMHO it is irrelevant that they only lose, say, 0.01%
of luggage. What is important is how they compare
with other forms of transit and I would suggest that
they probably lose 100 times the amount of luggage
than competing modes do.

Contact your insurance company. Most companies that offer home owners or
renters coverage have an option to cover computers, camera gear, etc.

I rather thought that this was explained.
Even with a specific extension for a named item, normal
household insurance will not cover you for an item when
is is (a) outside your home and (b) not immediately within
your care.
Locked inside an aircraft hold fails this test.

You're right, your homeowner's policy won't cover that sort of loss, but
dozens of insurance companies sell commercial casualty coverage for all
sorts of risks. For someone who travels often with expensive equipment,
checked or unchecked, it may be worth the investment (and will be easier to
recover on, since you can set the deductivble going in, different from the
standard deduction rules (in most US states) on Homeowners' policies.
