Cathay Pacific and EVA would be both excellent choices. Couldn't recommend
China Airlines or Thai.

Singapore Air. SQ1 to Singapore connecting to SQ64 to Bangkok. I fly
that route half a dozen times a year, at least.
Second choice would be Singapore Air.
If not that, then try Singapore Air.
Cathay and Thai can be cheaper and still give reasonably good service.
For Thai you have to take a United code share. Problem is the arrival
times in Bangkok and departure time from Bangkok. Middle of the night.

So, do you think Singapore Air would be a good choice?

Singapore Air is an excellent airline. However, SQ1 stops in Hong Kong,
then proceeds to Singapore. There you have to connect to another flight to
Thailand. You asked for the best airline, but does that mean best value?
shortest flight? number of stops? cabin service and comfort?
All things considered I would definitely still check out Cathay or EVA,
because you can often get a great fare, one-stop service to Bangkok, and
both airlines are in the same league as SQ (in my opinion).
You also didn't tell us where in Thailand you will be flying, which may
change things. | |

It might be. ;-)
The following poster pointed out that there is an additional stop using
SQ, which is true. However the quality of the service and equipment as
well as a couple of different flying schedules (one departures SFO
mid-day, the other mid-night) makes a difference.
There's also the SQ FAs. Can't be beat.

Are you forgetting about BR, CX, CI, PR and OZ. There are also a lot of
combinations with one-stop service (KE, JL, MU, CA etc.)
And if you want one-stop service, then CX and BR are excellent choices.

And that's a point that the US airlines just don't understand. Airlines
like Singapore and Cathay offer superior service. No US carrier can
compete. And SQ, CX, BR etc. are always fully booked a profitable.

My post was about Thai, not about Singapore or Cathay. Thai planes
are cramped, they don't have personal IFE (unlike US carriers), their
hub is a dump. What's better about Thai than an average US airline?
>No US carrier can compete.
US carriers seem to be competing just fine with Singapore and Cathay on
transpacific routes, and making money, too. If you look at United's
financials, their Asian routes are actually profitable, and they keep
adding new ones even in bankruptcy.
This is not to say that their service is better or anything, but
apparently a lot of people choose US carriers over competition -
probably because they offer a wider selection of nonstops and better
connections from US airports other than LAX and SFO. If you have
to fly from, say, Texas to Korea, neither Singapore, nor Cathay is a
viable option. | |
