Zihuatanejo is certainly far more "Mexican" and less touristy, but the
"real" deal are the numerous inland vacation spots with better climates,
food, and pleasure for the relaxation oriented....
For several days, a spot like Fortin de las Flores, near Orizaba, under the
Volcano, between Vera Cruz and Puebla, gardenias floating a in a pool with a
bar at "stand in the pool" height used to be hard to beat, with nearby
Cordoba featuring near tropical views and colonial architecture.
I like Patzcuaro, an hour from the Morelia airport (directs from LA and
IAH), but there are others.
