Default China Airlines - SEA -> BKK...opinions?

I'm looking for a flight from Seattle to Bangkok on short notice (about
a week from now). All the cheapest flights all seem to be on China
Airlines, a carrier that I know nothing about (I'm surprised that Eva
Air flights are much more - maybe because of the short advance
booking).

Any opinions on China Airlines? Seating comfort? Reliability? Things
to watch out for? Do you get to pick your seat, or is it the Southwest
Airlines hell? If I get some random seat (stuck in the middle seat),
I'd rather skip that experience.

Thanks for any tips/opinions/experiences re China Airlines.

You might try flexible dates. Usually the EVA flight is a 747 combination
passenger/freight airplane so the cheap seats sell out quickly. Sometimes
EVA uses the all-passenger version, and there are more cheap seata
available. Also consider Northwest and United. Northwest uses brand-new
Airbus 330's with IFE for this route. You can also consider flying
PDX-NRT-BKK using Northwest (also new A330's), or several choices from
Vancouver.

Personally I refuse to fly China Airlines due to their poor safety
reputation (among other things).

Well, it urned out that Korean Airlines was substantially cheaper than
both China Airlines and EVA, so we went with them.
