the news from other places and watch video and talk to anyone anywhere
is there even any reason to travel any more? Say an average trip to
Europe costs $5,000. Well, you can put that money to much better use,
say remodeling your home to get a higher resale value, put in a pool,
a deck, a wet bar, replace your furniture, or buy a better car. Heck,
you could buy a huge plasma tv and have money left over. Or put the
money into your IRA or 401K at work and retire earlier. Why would
anyone still be crazy enough to want to go through all the hassle of
travel? The crowds, the heat, the noise. The smells (everyone knows
the Europeans don't bathe very often). And they're stingy as hell.
In the summer you die of heat since there are no air conditioners.
And in the winter you freeze to death as there is either no heating,
or the stingy locals keep it real low so it makes not difference. Not
to mention everything is expensive as hell. Plus the attitudes.
Everyone hates Americans. Who in their right mind would want to
travel??? | |

| | Guest | Is there any reason to travel to Europe any more? More profoundly shallow reasons to avoid travelling over-there::
10. They talk funny unlike in NYC & Atlanta & Chicago.
9. When ya order a hamburger, they almost will never ask if ya "want
fries with that," at least as politely as in the junque feed places
here
8. Nobody there knows about fashionable clothing, such as cool bermuda
shorts, tank tops in a cathedral, and that totally classic tee shirt
with the bright yellow smiley face
7. Reddish double decker busses driving on the wrong side of the road
are just too frightening, especially from the upper deck (TRUE)
6. So what's wrong with being so fat-looking to them skinny-butt
foreigners?
5. Them gosh-damne Europees is so unaware of Western civilization that
they have to go to boring museums to find it
4. Hey, if there's one thing I could see or do or buy over there that
I can't in a video, I'd rent that gondola at the New Imitation Venetian
Vegas Hotel or and just sing, IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTERALL, while
checking-out at a Walmart or at a DOLLAR STORE
3. Ya know, Old Europe has no idea what it takes to fight & die for
peace in the World
2. If them frugal Europees boycott our tres cher tourist traps too,
then c'est la vie
1. It's One World, My Butt
0. So what if that Pound Sterling is now nearly two U.S.Ds? We're still
number one, n'est-ce pas?

The dollar hasn't been roughly 1 -1 to the Euro for some time.

Travel used to be a discretionary activity. Only the well off could
afford to do it. It still is, or rather should be, but nowadays due
to television everybody wants what everybody else has. As a result,
too many people travel who cannot really afford to. IMHO nobody
should be traveling unless they have a house, a good job (or other
source of income), all bills paid on time, no credit card debt,
adequate savings for retirement, etc. I would even go so far as to
say that if you are still paying off the mortgage on your house you
have no business traveling for leisure. Save it for when your house
is paid in full. But many Americans suffer from a need for instant
gratification. They gotta have it now.
Then also many people in the U.S. have a fantasy idea of a once in a
lifetime trip to Europe. They feel it's something everyone has to do
once in their lives, if only keep up with the neighbors or coworkers
and to brag about to friends and family (and put them through the
dreaded European Trip slide show). Do Europeans harbor a similar
desire/need for a once in a lifetime trip to the U.S.?

I think you will find that those who go to America do it mainly because it
is an awful lot cheaper than Europe and, with the well developed cheap
Trans-Atlantic flights, it lowers the cost even further.
Most of the people I know who go there go to Florida to Disney World or to
the Caribbean Islands to loaf in the sun for a couple of weeks to get a tan
and behave badly. I would be surprised if the concept of a desire/need for a
once in a lifetime trip to the U.S. ever crossed their minds.

I don't think so. I thought I said that "Most of the people I know who go to
America etc" I wouldn't presume to know what all the people who go to the
States on holiday think or do. I leave such absurd generalisations in the
hands of other contributers to this NG
