 Standby flights

Let me clarify. A friend of mine needed to fly to Singapore, so he just
turned up at the Singapore Airlines desk, and was sold a Standby ticket with
a confirmed Inbound reservation for 400 GBP, which I think is a very good
price. He arrived at 10.30 am, couldn't get on the 12:00 flight, but got a
seat on the 16:25.
I am really wondering if this may be a good stategy for travel to the Far
East..
