If I remember correctly, the DC-9 used the same fuselage cross-section as
the DC-8 and also used a modified version of the DC-8 nose, too.

Not true, at least the former. The DC-9 has a narrower fuselage than
the DC-8. Hence the fact that coach in a DC-9 is 2+3, while on a DC-8
it is (was) 3+3.

Why, on close examination, I can detect similarities between the
nose of the Boeing Model 777 and that of the company's earlier
Model 247, not much spotted in the world's airports today. Of
course Donald Douglas, never one to abandon a nice line, kept a
little of the DC-1's nose around as a tracing pattern, and it's
made the trip over to Boeing to remain on the 717.

Perhaps the Tristar would have been more successful had Lockheed
remembered to plant a little Connie Humpback on its fuselage.
Three tails would have helped.

NO! The DC-9 did not use the same fuselage cross-section as the DC-8. It
was much thinner being only 5 abreast seating.
