Namibia Epupa Falls

I am planning my travel in namibia with my wife for next September.
We will spend 21 days in a self-drive tour.
We would like to add a stop at the Epupa Falls in Kaokoland.
>From what i read the road from Opuwo to Epupa is very bad, and i will
need a 4x4.
I am looking for fresh news.
Anyone have travelled for this road?
Rent a 4x4 more expansive than a normal car and we are only two people.

What do you think, the Epupa Falls deserve the extra money and extra
road?
