Default Misconnection insurance?

I am looking for a travel insurance that would cover a misconnection
between two separately ticketed flights. I've looked around, but
standard travel insurance only seems to cover trip interruption if
the flight delay is caused by bad weather or a systemwide strike.
What I want is a fairly significant coverage (around $2,000) if the
first flight is delayed, for example, for mechanical reasons, and I
end up missing the second flight and having to stay overnight, buy a
new ticket, etc. Any advice?

No necessarily. If you miss the flight and you are connecting onto a flight
which is on the same ticket. Then it is the airlines responsibility to
ensure you reach your intended destination. Recent posts would suggest they
don't have to give you anywhere to stay overnight.

If you are on seperate tickets, then it's just tough luck.

I believe my travel insurance when I went to the USA (from UK) included
missed connection insurance.

In my case, the problem is that while the flights are on the same
airline, they are ticketed separately, on separate reservations (this
is a small African airline, and there was no way to book both segments
on the same ticket). If I misconnect for some reason (mechanical
breakdown, the pilot is drunk, whatever), I'll miss my flights to
Europe and on to America and will probably be stuck for several days
until the next flight out, and maybe even have to buy an expensive
one-way ticket at the last minute.

After reading the fine print of several standard travel insurance
policies, it appears that they do not cover this situation if the
delay is not weather-related.
