Default Local Kenza/Tanzania Flights...

I'm going to E. Africa on a Photo Safari next week. We are flying among
other places Arusha-Nairobi and Nairobi-Masi Mara Area on scheduled local
airlines (Sorry I don't have the details yet).

I'm aware that in general one is allowed 15Kilos (?33lbs) per person of
luggage. I have several questions about this limit:

1. How strictly is it adhered to?
2. Does it include carry-ons (like small day-packs) in addition to regular
luggage?
3. If one goes over this limit, what kind of charges can one expect?

Thanks,
Barry T

It will probably depend on how big the plane is, and how full it is.

If it's a small plane (eg Cessna 206), weight and size of baggage (and
passengers) is critical for your safety. Larger planes have more tolerance
and are less likely to be 100% full of people. The 15kg includes all
luggage.

I've flown the Arusha/Nairobi route several times with about 17-18 kg
luggage and a 8-10k carry-on, with no problems, but the plane usually takes
12-20 passengers, and was never totally full. Finding space to put carry-on
bags comfortably is more of an issue than weight, especially if you are
carrying long lenses and tripods. If your carry-on is bulky and expensive
photo gear, hang on to it at check in, and ask to put it in the baggage area
as you get on the plane.

For going down to the Mara, you may be on a smaller plane (and they will fly
with as small a plane as possible to match the number of passengers) but in
general you should be OK. If they get strict, the charge is 1USD per kilo -
assuming they have the capacity to take it.

One option, depending on the tour arrangements, is to leave a bag in Nairobi
while you go to the Mara. I think there is a left luggage place at Wilson
airport - otherwise your tour guide should be able to help.

Remember anyway, travelling light is always a good discipline. No need for
too many clothes - easy to get laundry done. But I suspect that it your
case (sorry about the pun) the weight will come from camera gear. Soft bags
recommended for easier stowage into small spaces.

Enjoy the trip - hope your photos are great.

David
