Default Directional Antennae

Anotherr one of those towpath tubthumps...

My mate and his circle of 'as-yet-not-internet-connected' pals have recently
clubbed together and sourced a BT broadband wireless hub....with one of
those antennaes that looks vaguely like a hedgecutter...my chum tells me
that the reception seems better when the hedgecutter is NOT pointed directly
at the line of boats, which he finds odd. I tried to exlain to him that
it's possible that the best reception is when the hedgecutter is pointed at
90degrees to the line of boat antennaes, thus to 'present' a multiple flat
'plain'. Imagine I am holing the hub antenna like a hedgecutter
blade...should I point it AT the line of boat antennaes or at 90degrees to
it ?

TIA,
