If there's any way you can get the medical cert
and do PPL, do it. I'm 56 and started Sport
Pilot training over a year ago. After much
pain, I got signed off (twice) for my practical
and after being torqued around by the only 2
designated examiners in the area, I decided to
get my 3rd class, do the ground school myself
and enroll in the local university flying school
for my PPL.
Your mileage might vary. I'm really, really
disappointed by the lack of professionalism,
organization and consistency of the sport pilot
organizations in my area.
